ICAAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and DotAsia tentatively signed an agreement to release the .asia domain names on December 6th, 2006. ICAAN is the quasi-governmental organization that oversees the functioning of the internet domain system. The .asia domains will be available for registration after the domain rules are established. These domains will supplement the domains already available to the Asia-Pacific region based on their country such as .cn for China and .jp for Japan.
DotAsia Organization Ltd. is also exploring the release of domain names in Asian languages. Now the domain name can only take standard Latin (English) character set.
ICAAN has also postponed its decision on releasing the adult domain name extension .xxx.
