Laser vision correction The answer to so many dreams.....

Laser vision correction - a highly successful method of correcting long and short sightedness along with astigmatism, works by changing the shape of the cornea. More than 20 million worldwide have undergone laser vision correction to free themselves from glasses and contact lenses.

Centre for Sight surgeons have performed laser vision correction since 1991 and amongst the first to perform LASIK in the UK. Centre for Sight also introduced IntraLASIK to the United Kingdom in 2004 a safer and painless procedure carried out by our skilled consultants who are all Fellowship trained specialists in Cornea and Refractive Surgery.

LASIK is one of the most common procedures performed worldwide and in the right hands and with the right technology has a phenomenal success rate. IntraLASIK takes safety one step further by using a LASER (Intralase) instead of a cutting device with a blade to perform the first stage of the LASIK procedure.

The Intralase laser works by firing 1 micron (1/1000th of a mm) pulses into a specific area in the cornea. These pulses exand to 3 microns and in the process separate the cornea in a very precise and reprudicble manner. This level of precision enables surgeons to create thin flaps which are planar (equal in dimension throughout). Thin flap Lasik with Intralase also known as Sub-Bowman's Keratomileusis (SBK) has been demonstrated to produce improved outcomes and has been approved for use in US fighter pilots and NASA astronauts !

Centre for Sight surgeons understanding the benefits of IntraLASIK and Intralase technology were the first to invest by a head start and led the way in this type of eye surgery in the UK.

Other laser vision correction procedures not often performed at Centre for Sight include Photorefractive Keratectomy ( PRK ), LASEK (laser subepithelial keratectomy and epi-LASIK. This laser eye surgery is confusing and all three procedures are similar in that the procedures are performed on the surface of the cornea under the epithelium. Centre for Sight do not favor PRK, LASEK or epi-LASIK as this type of sye surgery is painful and visual recovery also takes longer. Of greater concern is the risk of haze which can be permanent. To avoid haze, some practitioners of advanced surface ablation as this is also referred use a toxic medication called Mitomycin C. The use of Mitomycin C for this purpose is highly controversial. Mitomycin C is used in the treatment of cancer and is not licensed for use on the eye. It is very toxic and acts like radiotherapy eliminating all cells. Centre for Sight only performs PRK, LASEK or epi-LASIK in those requiring very small levels of correction, for instance in those who have remaining shortsight, longsight or astigmatism following ICL or Artisan or multifocal and crystalens implants
